If you are new to WordPress, choosing a theme for your website is pretty much the first task you must complete. You cannot configure your site’s posts, pages and images until you have decided what the overall look (or theme) is. This tutorial will cover how to install a WordPress theme for your new website.
Access Theme Location
When you want to install a new theme, the first thing you want to do is login to your website’s admin dashboard. Once you are logged in, using the left hand bar, go to Appearance -> Themes.
This page will show you all the themes that are currently installed on your website. To add a new theme, click on the blue Add New button at the top.
This page gives you two ways to apply a new theme onto your site. You can either use the search option to explore the thousands of free templates available on WordPress.org or you can upload a theme that is from another source.
Install A Wordpress Theme From The Theme Directory
This is the simplest option to add a new theme to your website is to pick one from the official WordPress.org theme directory. This method allows you to search for a theme without even leaving your WordPress admin page. Every theme that is in this directory has a descriptor tag that let’s you know it’s functionality. These tags can help find the right theme for you!
If you know the name of the theme you are looking for you can simply enter it in the search bar.
If it seems overwhelming to pick a theme from the thousands available, try using the Feature Filter. This menu helps you filter through the massive list of themes by using tags that you want in your website. For example, we could say that our subject matter is a Blog with a Grid Layout and has a Custom Header. Check the appropriate boxes and click Apply Filters.
The themes show will be ones that have met your search criteria. Hover any theme and you will be given two options. You can preview what that theme looks like in action or you can install it. Once you have found the right theme for you click the blue Install button.
Your new WordPress theme will then begin to download. Once it has completed, click Active and you are ready to go. You can navigate to your website’s front page to see the new look.
Upload A Theme
If you have a theme that is not available on WordPress.org , you can upload it by going to Themes -> Add New section in WordPress. Click on the Upload Theme button at the top of the page.
Then click the Choose File button, select the downloaded theme zip file from your local machine and click Install Now.
WordPress will then upload and extract your theme without you having to do a thing. Finally click Activate after it has completed the extracting process.
That’s it! You now know how to install a WordPress theme.
